Approximation Algorithms for Finding Maximum Induced Expanders

چکیده
We initiate the study of approximating the largest induced expander in a given graph G. Given a ∆-regular graph G with n vertices, the goal is to find the set with the largest induced expansion of size at least δ ·n. We design a bi-criteria approximation algorithm for this problem; if the optimum has induced spectral expansion λ our algorithm returns a λ log δ exp(∆/λ) -(spectral) expander of size at least δn (up to constants). Our proof introduces and employs a novel semidefinite programming relaxation for the largest induced expander problem. We expect to see further applications of our SDP relaxation in graph partitioning problems. In particular, because of the close connection to the small set expansion problem, one may be able to obtain new insights into the unique games problem.

Approximation Algorithms for the Maximum Induced Planar and Outerplanar Subgraph Problems
The task of finding the largest subset of vertices of a graph that induces a planar subgraph is known as the Maximum Induced Planar Subgraph problem (MIPS). In this paper, some new approximation algorithms for MIPS are introduced. The results of an extensive study of the performance of these and existing MIPS approximation algorithms on randomly generated graphs are presented. Efficient algorit...
متن کاملShort Paths in Expander Graphs
Graph expansion has proved to be a powerful general tool for analyzing the behavior of routing algorithms and the inter{connection networks on which they run. We develop new routing algorithms and structural results for bounded{degree expander graphs. Our results are uniied by the fact that they are all based upon, and extend, a body of work asserting that expanders are rich in short, disjoint ...
متن کاملAlgorithms for Finding a Maximum Non-k-linked Graph
A graph with at least 2k vertices is said to be k-linked if for any ordered k-tuples (s1, . . . , sk) and (t1, . . . , tk) of 2k distinct vertices, there exist pairwise vertex-disjoint paths P1, . . . , Pk such that Pi connects si and ti for i = 1, . . . , k. For a given graph G, we consider the problem of finding a maximum induced subgraph of G that is not k-linked. This problem is a common ge...
متن کاملEfficient Approximation Algorithms for Point-set Diameter in Higher Dimensions
We study the problem of computing the diameter of a set of $n$ points in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for a fixed dimension $d$, and propose a new $(1+varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+ 1/varepsilon^{d-1})$ time and $O(n)$ space, where $0 < varepsilonleqslant 1$. We also show that the proposed algorithm can be modified to a $(1+O(varepsilon))$-approximation algorithm with $O(n+...
متن کاملFinding Graph Matchings in Data Streams
We present algorithms for finding large graph matchings in the streaming model. In this model, applicable when dealing with massive graphs, edges are streamed-in in some arbitrary order rather than residing in randomly accessible memory. For ǫ > 0, we achieve a 1 1+ǫ approximation for maximum cardinality matching and a 1 2+ǫ approximation to maximum weighted matching. Both algorithms use a cons...
